Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Palmer off as Blues beaten

by Alex Matthews

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham brought a difficult end to Saturday’s derby at Stamford Bridge, with a Mike Penders own goal, Cole Palmer’s dismissal and Mathys Tel’s late finish deciding the game. Chelsea reached the final quarter of an hour level, but three incidents in ten minutes left Xabi Alonso’s side without a response.

The completed beIN Sports match account and TNT Sports’ full-time commentary confirm a 2-0 Spurs win. It was a very different outcome from the complete performance Alonso had sought in his pre-match assessment.

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Penders error breaks the deadlock

Penders made important saves before the opening goal. NBC Sports’ pitchside coverage described his first-half stop from Omar Marmoush as a major chance for Tottenham, while Antonin Kinsky also denied Chelsea at the other end.

The match remained goalless at half-time. Chelsea later threatened through Pedro Neto, whose effort was pushed away by Kinsky after a loose Tottenham pass created an opening.

The decisive mistake came in the 77th minute. Penders tried to punch away a left-wing corner, but the ball went backwards into his own net. The broadcaster accounts record it as an own goal, not a goal for the Spurs player challenging in front of him.

It was a harsh turn in Penders’ first Premier League start. His earlier interventions had helped keep the game level, but Chelsea were now chasing the derby.

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Palmer sent off before Tel scores

Palmer had already been booked during a confrontation involving Mateus Fernandes. In the 80th minute, a foul on Conor Gallagher brought a second yellow card and his dismissal, leaving Chelsea a goal and a player down.

The distinction matters: this was a second-yellow dismissal, not a straight red card. The completed reports agree on that sequence, which made the task of recovering the game harder.

Tel then put the result beyond Chelsea in the 87th minute. TNT Sports described him driving in from the left and sending a low shot into the corner. Spurs protected the two-goal advantage through stoppage time.

A derby setback for Alonso

Chelsea’s selection had already been shaped by absences. The official Spurs line-up announcement listed Penders in goal and Geovany Quenda among Chelsea’s starters, while Joao Pedro was not in the matchday squad. His absence should not be turned into an injury diagnosis without a verified explanation.

Our pre-match Chelsea team-news report covered the earlier fitness picture. The result leaves a separate performance question for Alonso: Chelsea stayed in the contest for much of the evening but were undone by the own goal, dismissal and late second.
