Chelsea Women 6-2 Tottenham: James and Carpenter hit braces as Girma misses out

by Alex Matthews

The Chelsea Women Tottenham game ended 6-2 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday after a devastating second-half display from the hosts. Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter scored twice each in Sonia Bompastor’s 50th Women’s Super League game in charge. The win keeps the Blues unbeaten this season, with five wins and a draw from six. The head coach also gave a fitness update on Naomi Girma and welcomed back her new club captain.

Chelsea Women 6-2 Tottenham: how the goals fell at Stamford Bridge

Tottenham arrived in decent form and made life awkward for Chelsea Women early on, but it took a moment of individual brilliance to open the scoring. James stole the ball from Toko Koga on the left flank. She drove to the byline and somehow fired in from what looked an impossible angle. Tottenham refused to fold. Their persistence was rewarded shortly before half-time, when Matilda Vinberg rose to head home Julie Blakstad’s cross from close range.

The second half of the Chelsea Women Tottenham game belonged to the hosts. Carpenter finished smartly to restore the lead before James produced another outstanding solo effort to make it three on the hour. Substitute Sjoeke Nusken then smashed home after excellent wing play from Alyssa Thompson. Maika Hamano, once of Spurs, netted a stunning strike from range against her former club. Tottenham grabbed a consolation three minutes from the end. Carpenter had the final word, completing her brace with composure in stoppage time.

Bompastor praises ‘unbelievable’ fans and gives Girma update

Bompastor was upbeat on the Chelsea Women Tottenham result. “I’m pleased with the performance and the result,” she said afterwards, per the club’s official site. “I was convinced coming into this game we would need players who would come in and bring a big impact and fresh legs.” She reserved special praise for the Chelsea Women crowd at Stamford Bridge – “the fans were unbelievable” – and for James, whom she described as world-class after a display that followed the forward’s brace for England in Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Greece. “Going with England was a big boost and I think she played really well, and we are now getting the benefit of that.”

Bompastor also explained Girma’s absence from the Chelsea Women squad to face Tottenham. “Naomi picked up a small injury in her calf before the international break,” Bompastor said. “That’s why she’s out of the squad. But right now I have depth in the squad. I have a lot of high-quality competition.” There was a quieter milestone for Chelsea Women in the second half. Erin Cuthbert made her first appearance of the season, and the new club captain got a warm reception when she came on after an hour.

Spurs were beaten heavily but scored twice at the Bridge. There were spells, particularly in a determined first half, that showed why they began the weekend in the top four. Chelsea Women look more impressive by the week against Tottenham and the rest, and the full squad Bompastor had available for this one makes the rest of the division’s task look no easier.
