A short history of the ground

The stadium opened in 1877 and was used by London Athletic Club until 1905, when Gus Mears founded Chelsea to occupy it. It was rebuilt into a modern all-seater stadium in the 1990s.
After a long legal battle, Ken Bates reunited the stadium freehold with the club in 1992. In the mid-1990s director Matthew Harding loaned the club £26 million to build the new North Stand.

Redevelopment

In July 2022 it was reported that new owner Todd Boehly had appointed American architect Janet Marie Smith to oversee renovation of the stadium. We will add confirmed plans here when the club publishes them.
