Everton vs Chelsea: momentum meets an unbeaten opponent

by Alex Matthews

Everton vs Chelsea brings the Blues’ first trip outside London this season, with Xabi Alonso’s side looking to follow their Bournemouth win with another Premier League victory.

The game at Hill Dickinson Stadium kicks off at 12.30pm UK time on Saturday 17 October. Both sides enter the weekend on ten points, according to Chelsea’s official match guide.

Everton vs Chelsea tests the Blues’ momentum

Chelsea won 5-1 at Stamford Bridge last weekend, but their recent away record against Everton gives this game a different edge.

The club’s official facts and statistics preview says the Blues have failed to score in their last three league visits to Everton. The most recent ended in a 3-0 defeat in March, on Chelsea’s first visit to the new stadium.

That history does not decide Saturday’s result. It does explain why carrying the attacking threat from the Bournemouth match onto the road would matter.

Everton vs Chelsea also brings together teams level on points. Everton’s two wins and four draws have left them unbeaten through six league games, the official guide says.

Attacking threat meets a defensive test

Chelsea have scored 15 league goals and conceded 13 across their opening six matches, so their games have produced plenty of chances at both ends.

The Everton vs Chelsea preview lists Joao Pedro with five league goals and three assists. His involvement is one reason the Blues can travel with confidence after the Bournemouth win.

At the other end, the same club guide records a run of 22 Premier League matches without a clean sheet. Joao Pedro has already spoken about the need for defensive progress alongside the team’s attacking work.

Kick-off and official coverage

Chelsea’s weekly diary confirms Saturday’s 12.30pm start and says the official match centre will carry confirmed team news, live updates and audio commentary.

Captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery, Chelsea have confirmed. He suffered the injury in training and missed the 5-1 win over Bournemouth. James has begun his recovery with the club’s medical staff at Cobham, although Chelsea have not given a return date.

Chelsea’s official Friday team-news update for Everton vs Chelsea confirms that Emmanuel Emegha and Jamie Gittens are unavailable. Emegha felt a problem on Thursday and is expected back in training next week, while Alonso said Gittens would be out for a few more weeks, without setting a return date. The manager also expects James to miss several weeks after successful surgery but has not set a recovery timeline. The starting line-up will be confirmed on matchday.

Chelsea’s task is to turn a strong home win into another result against an unbeaten opponent. Everton vs Chelsea offers an early test of whether the Blues can keep their attacking momentum while giving less away.
