Alyssa Thompson goal gives Chelsea Women 1-0 win over Arsenal

by cfcnews

Chelsea Women beat Arsenal 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 27 September, as Alyssa Thompson’s first-half strike settled the latest Women’s Super League London derby. The win ends Arsenal’s 20-match unbeaten league run, which stretched back to October 2025.

Thompson pounced after Keira Walsh’s long-range effort was kept out by Arsenal goalkeeper Anneke Borbe. The rebound fell kindly inside the box and the forward fired home in emphatic style, according to Sky Sports’ match report.

Arsenal had started the brighter of the two sides. Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey both struck the post before Chelsea went in front, and the visitors were left to rue not making their early dominance count.

The goal was the standout moment of a competitive afternoon in west London. Arsenal improved again after the break, but Chloe Kelly’s angled drive was blocked and Alessia Russo saw an effort charged down as Chelsea held on for a third WSL win of the season.

As The Guardian’s report noted, the derby also carried a personal subplot. Katie McCabe faced Arsenal for the first time since ending an 11-year spell with the Gunners to join Chelsea in the summer.

What the result means for the table

Victory moves Chelsea to within two points of league leaders Manchester City. Arsenal, who had drawn their previous two league matches, are already seven points adrift of the pace before their meeting with City on 4 October.

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers was measured afterwards. “Very disappointed. We know it’s a tough game, Chelsea away,” she told Sky Sports. “I think we did well in the first half in the physical battle and dominated until their goal. We found it hard in the second half and it cost us more energy.”

Asked what is not clicking for her side, she added: “It’s a cocktail of things. It’s everything. Technical and psychological. We’re looking at it. I believe in these players. The goals and the points will come.”

From our preview to full time

Our preview framed the derby as an early test between two unbeaten sides rather than a September title decider. Chelsea passed that test, and the result gives Chelsea a useful early edge in the head-to-head, though there is a long way to go.
